HistoricCrossways was built as a small country house by a London merchant, it is believed he built it for his sisters, who were later evicted because they were operating a house of ill repute.

Later Col. & Mrs Gwynn are believed to have owned Crossways, they were the parents of Elizabeth David, the great cookery writer. Ms David is now buried at Folkington Church some two miles from Crossways
